As I was gathering my clothes together to start writing and photographing for my Winter 2017 Capsule Wardrobe post, I decided I wanted to break the bottoms out into their own post. I realized that I use the same 6 basic wardrobe bottoms in almost all my capsules. So it was fitting that they should get the spotlight!
6 Basic Wardrobe Bottoms
I got to thinking about how my go-to pants (and skirt) actually work for any style. I lean more classic, but these bottoms work with trendy, boho, edgy, or whatever your beautiful mom style may be.
1. Dark Wash Skinny Jeans
If you were going to invest in only one of these six basic wardrobe bottoms, then dark wash skinny jeans are it. Mine are Modern Skinny Jeans in Dark Rinse Wash from LOFT. I like the hem to fall right below the ankle bone to work with heels, flats, and also to roll a cute cuff.
2. Black Skinny Jeans
Black jeans are a great way to polish up an outfit but still be comfortable and practical. Black is slimming and flattering on basically everyone, and if you get the fit right, they’d look good with just about any top you pair with them. Mine are Curvy Skinny Jeans in Black from LOFT.
3. Boyfriend Jeans
These jeans are by far my very favorite! I wear them so much that they’ve been washed a hundred times and are so soft. In fact, they’re getting a little threadbare and I’m worried they might rip soon. Mine are from Gap Factory years and years ago, but here is a similar pair from Lucky Brand that I am thinking about replacing mine with.
4. Jeggings
Okay, so I’ve avoided jeggings since they first showed up on the infomercials as pajama jeans (do you remember those?!). But they’ve come so far since then, I thought I’d give them a try, and I’m glad I did. Here’s why: 1. They lay flat on your waist under slimmer tops (no more jeans button popping out!) and 2. They are so flippin comfortable. No one knows I’m wearing leggings but I still look like I made an effort that morning. I have these from Versona (they even have a tummy slimming panel and real back pockets for your phone!).
5. Black Leggings
It wouldn’t be a mom style post if there weren’t black leggings included, right?! Everyone knows the benefits of black leggings so I won’t wax poetic here. But I’ve found a great quality inexpensive pair ($20)! that will keep you warm and won’t stretch thin. Plus you can wear these as pants because they actually are pants. Grab your perfect holy grail black leggings here.
6. Black Skirt
This feels kinda like cheating because I haven’t actually worn this skirt yet. In all fairness though, this is a replacement for the black pencil skirt I used to wear. I replaced that one because it was too formal for everyday outfits. This one is a super comfy and flattering stretch-knit that looks great dressed up and down. It’s a LuLaRoe Cassie. Join the FB groups from my two favorite LLR consultants here and here and ask them to keep an eye out for one for you. At $35 it’s definitely worth the wait.
